Random Car Wednesday: 1989 Dodge Dakota Convertible

Welcome to this week's installment of RCW on Shifting Gears. This time around we've got a bit of an oddball: the 1989 Dodge Dakota Convertible. The Dakota was Dodge's mid-range pickup in the 1980's. It wasn't quite as massive as the fullsize Ram 1500, but it was bigger than the Mitsubishi-derived Ram 50 models. It's main competitors were the Chevrolet S-10 and the Ford Ranger. The Dakota was a fairly capable truck, and engine options ranged from a 2.2 liter Straight-4 all the way up to a 3.9 liter V6 powerplant. A 5.2 liter V8 was made available later on. At one point there was even a Shelby Dakota, one of several Shelby-tuned Chryslers to come out of the 1980's. This particular Dakota is sporting the rather unusual convertible option. From 1989 to 1991, the Dakota was available as a convertible. This one is in good shape, and looks sharp with aftermarket wheels and silver paint. It may not be the most practical vehicle, nor does it make a tremendous deal of sense, but it certainly looks like a fun vehicle to drive. And ultimately, that's more than enough to get my seal of approval.

  2. So sad to report that this truck was totalled this week in an accident in San Antonio. But, I'll be on the lookout for a replacement. If you come across any Dodge Dakota convertibles for sale, in any condition, let me know! solisrough.com

  3. Ouch! That's terrible news. These have started to become pretty rare, but I'll keep my ear to the ground.
